Polygon Faces Scrutiny Over Security and Centralization Concerns Amidst Rapid Growth

The genesis of the current controversy can be traced back to a series of tweets by Justin Bons on February 12, 2022. In a detailed thread, Bons asserted, "Polygon in its current state is insecure & centralized! It would only take 5 people to compromise over $5B! 4 of those people are the founders of Poly! This is one of the largest hacks or exit scams just waiting to happen. Reckless & irresponsible, a warning to the wise." This strong indictment directly targeted the operational security of the Polygon network, specifically highlighting the control mechanisms surrounding its administrative functions.

The Vulnerability of the Multisignature Contract

At the heart of Bons’ critique lies the Polygon smart contract multisig contract, which manages the crucial Polygon smart contract admin key. Bons explained that this multisig contract operates on a "five out of eight" threshold. This configuration, in his analysis, implies that a mere five individuals, four of whom are Polygon founders, could potentially collude to gain complete control over the network. The implication is that the Polygon team, through its founders and a select group of other parties, could effectively wield unilateral authority over a substantial sum of user funds.

"The Polygon smart contract admin key is controlled by a five out of eight multi-signature contract," Bons elaborated. "This means that the Polygon [team] can gain complete control over Polygon with only one of the four outside parties conspiring. The other four parties in the multisig were also selected by Polygon." This selection process, Bons argued, suggests a lack of impartiality among the external signatories, thereby increasing the perceived risk. The ability to alter network rules or access these substantial funds raises the specter of manipulation and potential financial loss for users.

This is not the first instance where Polygon’s operational transparency has been questioned. Chris Blec of DeFi Watch had previously lodged a formal request with the Polygon team, seeking greater clarity on their security and governance protocols. According to Bons and reports from DeFi Watch, Polygon did not provide a comprehensive response to Blec’s inquiry, further fueling the perception of opacity. Such a lack of transparency can erode trust within the cryptocurrency community, where openness and accountability are paramount.

The Polygon team, while not always directly addressing every individual critique, has a history of responding to recurring concerns about its multisig implementation. Previously, they published a multisig transparency report aimed at clarifying the network’s security measures. In direct response to Bons’ tweets, Mihailo Bjelic, co-founder of Polygon, indirectly acknowledged the validity of some of the multisig-related concerns, stating that the team is "working towards removing them."

Bjelic, in a tweet thread on February 14, 2022, addressed the use of multisigs, explaining that they are a standard practice in the nascent stages of blockchain development. "They [multisigs] are considered the optimal approach to secure user funds in the early phases of development and are used by almost every scaling and bridging project," he stated. Bjelic reiterated the points made in the transparency report, emphasizing a long-term "plan to improve and eventually remove multisigs."

Regarding the specific accusation of an "exit scam," Bjelic firmly refuted this as an unrealistic concern for Polygon. He explained that multisigs are primarily implemented to safeguard users from external attacks rather than to facilitate internal malfeasance. Bjelic asserted that Polygon’s current use of the multisig is a responsible measure, directly contradicting Bons’ claims of recklessness.

Analyzing the Multisig Configuration and External Signatories

Bons’ critique of the five-out-of-eight multisig system highlighted its perceived inadequacy for securing a sum as substantial as $5 billion. He contended that the allocation of four multisig slots to parties selected by Polygon created an undue risk of collusion. However, Bjelic offered a different perspective on the nature and selection of these external signatories.

"The more signers, the harder it is to coordinate them in case an immediate reaction is required," Bjelic explained in his response. "We are trying to find the right balance here; we already have more signers than most of the other scaling projects." He further clarified that the external parties involved are "reputable Ethereum/Polygon projects and were not selected by Polygon, they decided to participate." This statement suggests that the selection process was more organic, involving willing participants from the broader ecosystem, rather than a unilateral decision by the Polygon core team.

Decentralization: The Path Forward

Beyond the immediate concerns about the multisig contract, Bons also put forth recommendations for Polygon’s long-term development, emphasizing the need for greater decentralization. He argued that Polygon’s current governance model, which he described as a highly centralized Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) system with a limited number of validators, falls short of true cryptocurrency ideals. Data from Polygonscan, the network’s block explorer, indicated that in the seven days preceding Bons’ critique, a mere four validators were responsible for mining a majority of the blocks. This concentration of power among a small group of entities raises questions about the network’s resilience and censorship resistance.

Bons proposed that Polygon should decentralize its governance structure, empowering MATIC token holders to have a more significant say in the network’s direction. As a crucial step in this decentralization process, he suggested transferring the smart contract admin key to the MATIC token holders, effectively establishing a "MATIC DAO" (Decentralized Autonomous Organization). Such a transition would likely necessitate a migration to a new Polygon smart contract, a technically challenging and resource-intensive undertaking.

"This would obviously be very difficult and costly to do," Bons acknowledged. "However, that is the price to pay for not doing things right, to begin with. It is the price we pay for decentralization and the security that comes along with that. This is what cryptocurrency should be all about." This perspective frames the necessary changes not as an admission of failure, but as an essential commitment to the foundational principles of decentralization and security inherent in blockchain technology.

Mihailo Bjelic indicated that this long-term vision aligns with Polygon’s strategic objectives. "This is definitely our goal, as described in the transparency report," he responded to Bons’ suggestions. "However, this will increase the reaction time in case of a bug, so it will be implemented and activated gradually." This suggests a phased approach to decentralization, balancing the need for immediate responsiveness in security incidents with the ultimate goal of distributed governance.
